The Weed and Mount Shasta high school basketball teams, co-champions in this year’s Shasta Cascade League, are both scheduled to host first round Northern Section playoff games Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m.
The Mount Shasta girls, who also won an SCL co-championship, will open the playoffs on the road Tuesday night, as will Dunsmuir High School’s boys team.
Weed (19-6 overall) is the No. 2 seed in the Northern Section’s Division V, meaning they would host as many as three games if they keep winning. They open the postseason against No. 15 Biggs (10-16) Wednesday night. With a first-round win, Weed would play again Friday night against either No. 7 Durham (14-12) or No. 10 Redding Christian (16-9).
Mount Shasta (16-8), which plays in the same league with Weed but moves up to Division IV for the playoffs, is seeded No. 6 among 12 teams and will host No. 11 Anderson (8-18) Wednesday night.
The winner of that game advances to play Friday night at No. 3 Central Valley (15-9), one of four teams with a first-round bye.
Mount Shasta’s girls (15-9), who shared the SCL title with both Etna and Fall River, are the No. 10 seed in the Division IV girls bracket and will open Tuesday night at No. 7 West Valley (9-16). The winner advances to play Thursday night at No. 2 Lassen (14-11).
As was the case for a few others during Saturday’s playoff seeding meeting, teams like Mount Shasta that play in leagues with teams from smaller schools don’t get as much credit for their victories.
Dunsmuir’s boys are seeded No. 11 in Division VI (schools with enrollments of 150 and under). The Tigers (9-13) will open at No. 6 Champion (13-11) Tuesday night. The winner will advance to play Thursday at No. 3 Paradise (15-11), one of four teams with a first round bye.
