Cannon’s Liquors went on an otherworldly offensive run and rose up from the No. 6 seed to win the 2008 College of the Siskiyous/South Siskiyou Men’s Softball League Tournament championship last Wednesday night at Shastice Field in Mount Shasta.
Cannon’s scored 94 runs in its final three games, including two lopsided wins, 31-7 and 41-19, over the Brew Crew in the championship round.
A previous tournament game that was reported as a 2-1 win by Cannon’s was actually a 32-1 blowout.
And it wasn’t a bunch of cheap home runs that produced all that offense. In this league each team only gets five home runs per game, then any balls hit out of the park are outs.
Cannon’s second baseman Brian Johnson was considered by many to be the team and tournament most valuable player. He had a batting average over .800 during the regular season and played strong defense.
Ron Driml, the team sponsor and a team member, said Cannon’s lost some close games it shouldn’t have during the regular season but played better defense and “hit the ball pretty well” during the tournament.
Final results in last Tuesday and Wednesday’s action are as follows.
July 29 — Cannon’s Liquors, 18 and Cheap Entertainment, 8; Brew Crew, 21 and Banquet Boys, 18.
July 30 — Cannon’s Liquors, 22 and Banquet Boys, 17; Cannon’s Liquors, 31 and Brew Crew, 7; Cannon’s Liquors, 42 and Brew Crew, 19 (championship game).
