Before half the field had even teed off to play their second rounds Aug. 5 at the 2010 Siskiyou Open, Greg Dawson chipped onto the par three 18th green from a tricky sidehill lie and rolled in a par putt to finish with a 70-78-148 score.

When all was said it done, that scrambling par proved to be the difference as Dawson won the gross over the field championship by one stroke over Bob Mainini of Albany.

Mike Anderson of Mount Shasta, like Dawson a Weed Club member, won the low net over the field title, making it the first time in many years that two locals took the top prizes in the 46 year old event, tournament director Paul Smithers said.

Dawson said he started playing in the Siskiyou Open at age 18 or so, and he had won many prizes over the year; but this was his first gross over the field victory.

He says he’s a self-taught golfer, except for two weeks of lessons he got as a teenager from former champion John Mazzei.

Greg played in the same foursome with his son Mathew, who came from three shots behind after the first round to tie his dad heading into Sunday’s back nine.

Just two weeks earlier Mathew and Caitlin Faria held their wedding on Weed Golf Club’s 9th green, just below the clubhouse.

Mathew, whose 9 handicap is one better than Greg’s, wound up finishing fourth overall at 150 and first low net in Flight 1.

Mathew said that if not for a double bogey on the eighth hole, he would have tied for the lead.

In all, 71 golfers played in this year’s Siskiyou Open. The weather was warm with little wind and the greens, as usual, were slick.

“We say if you can putt the greens at Weed, you can putt greens anywhere,” said Weed Men’s Club president Jerry French.

Many of those in the field return to the Siskiyou Open every year, but none as often as Jerry Boyer of Redding who competed for the 45th time. “It’s always good up here,” said Boyer.

Prizes were $300 for each of the over-the-field winners, $150 for first place gross and net in each flight, $100 for second place and $50 for third.

Following are the results of the 46th annual Siskiyou Open hosted by Weed Golf Club, Inc.
