The producers/researchers behind the new obesity documentary "Killer at Large" are coming out in defense of Los Angeles' recent progressive measures to address obesity in their community. The Children’s International Obesity Foundation, the Utah State Department of Health, and members of the American Medical Association recently recognized the impact this film could have on obesity and the awareness of its causes.
With the rate of obesity higher than the national average Los Angeles Councilwoman Jan Perry is seeking to impose a moratorium on new fast food restaurants in the area. Realizing that eliminating such new establishments is only one part of fixing the problem, Perry is also doing her best to attract quality restaurants and grocery stores to areas those companies typically ignore.
"A lot of people don't realize," said “Killer at Large” Director Steven Greenstreet, "the poorer you are, the fatter you're likely to be, or even why that is the case. It seems as though the L.A. City Council is realizing this fact and is taking appropriate steps to deal with the problem in the face of intense lobbying pressure."
Producer Bryan Young explained, "This move to counter obesity will be fought long and hard by companies that endanger the health and safety of these communities in the name of their bottom line. When you provide the cheapest and easiest access to food as calorically dense as the offerings at fast food places, the rational economic strategy for people in those neighborhoods is to eat this bad food and get fat and sick. It's good to see the City of Los Angeles trying to do something about it."
"Killer at Large" examines the startling details of the American obesity epidemic and why this issue has crossed from a public health crisis to a national security issue. When asked in the film what the most pressing issue facing America today, former Surgeon General Richard Carmona responds, "Obesity. Because obesity is a terror within. It is destroying our society from within and unless we do something about it, the magnitude of the dilemma will dwarf 9/11 or any other terrorist event you can point out."
"Killer at Large" features interviews and footage of notable experts and celebrities speaking on the topic of the American obesity epidemic including Former President Bill Clinton, Former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, Ralph Nader, Dr. Kelly Brownell, Dr. Marion Nestle, and bestselling authors Michael Pollan and Chef Ann Cooper, among many others.
In June, "Killer at Large" won two major awards from annual film festivals; the film took the Silver Medal Best Documentary Award at the prestigious International Filmmaker Festival in the UK and that same week earned the Best Political Documentary prize at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival. The first week in July, the film also received an award from the Indie Gathering Film Festival and will be showing at the festival in Cleveland, OH in August.
