It’s been three months since the San Francisco Giants won the World Series, and soon Siskiyou County residents will get a chance to join in the celebration.
The Giants’ Commissioner’s Trophy, awarded after the team beat the Texas Rangers to win their first World Series since moving to San Francisco in 1958, will be making a stop in Mount Shasta next month.
Mount Shasta Recreation and Parks District administrator Mike Rodriguez said the trophy will be in Mount Shasta on Sunday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City Park’s main lodge.
Fans can view the trophy for free, and have the option of having a professional photo taken with it and purchasing prints online.
Organizers will make the decision whether or not fans will be able to take photos with their own camera, according to the Giants’ website.
One thing’s for sure – no one will be allowed to touch the 20-pound, 24 inch trophy, which was crafted by Tiffany & Company.
“For more than 52 years, our dedicated fans have supported us through thick and thin,” said Giants managing general partner and CEO Bill Neukom in a press release. “The trophy belongs to them as much as it belongs to us, and we want to thank our fans by extending the World Champions celebration throughout Giants country.”
Rodriguez said he went to see the trophy when it was in Redding last month, and asked if it would be possible to get it to Mount Shasta.
Rodriguez has been the local Junior Giants commissioner for the past 15 years. This connection may be one of the reasons his request was granted, he said.
“I’m excited the trophy will be coming here... at first it looked like it would only be stopping in the bigger cities.”
Over the past month, the trophy has been touring around Northern California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. It will also visit New York, the Giants’ original home before the team relocated to the Bay Area 52 years ago.
When it stopped in Redding on Jan. 9, about 3,000 people turned out to Big League Dreams to see it.
The trophy will return to AT&T park for the Giants’ first home game of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 8.
