The McCloud based Shasta Sunset Dinner Train has announced that it will discontinue service effective Jan. 1, 2010 with the New Year’s Eve excursion the last run.
The Shasta Sunset Dinner Train began operations on June 1, 1996 and has been an integral part of the McCloud community. President and owner, Jeff Forbis says he is hopeful that someone will purchase and continue the operation of the business, but he will not operate the dinner train next year.
He is asking $5 million for the dinner train, tracks, property and gift shop and says he has “several possibilities on the line right now.”
“It has been a joy for me to give our customers the opportunity to experience the nostalgia and elegance of what train travel used to be,” Jeff said. “It was as if we traveled to another era every time we left the station.”
Vice president Jalene Forbis added her thanks to the train’s workers. “We’d like to thank our loyal employees for their dedication and for making the dinner train a special experience for our customers,” Jalene said.
The Shasta Sunset Dinner Train, which currently employs 20 people, will continue operations through the end of the year, including Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve and still has availability on those trips. The final run will be New Year's Eve.  Those interested in riding on one of the final trips can make reservations by calling 530-964-2142.
