With snow again falling in Siskiyou County Wednesday morning, April 21, 2010, the California Department of Transportation is using its vehicle metering system on Interstate 5 starting approximately 10 miles north of Redding at Fawndale.

Chains are also being required for northbound traffic on all vehicles except four-wheel drives with snow tread tires on all four wheels and provided that tire traction devices for at least one set of drive wheels are carried in or upon the vehicle. The R-2 chain restriction begins at the Shasta/Siskiyou County line for northbound traffic on I-5.

Changeable Message Signs and Highway Advisory Radio has been activated according to Caltrans.

Traffic metering is implemented as a congestion control method when necessary to limit the number of vehicles that feed into a snow area, according to Caltrans’ District 2.
