Four local softball players, Sydney Cross, Ashley Cox, Kayla Spini and Tori Weatherford recently earned second place honors and qualified their teams for the ASA Nationals and the ASA Western Nationals.

Sydney Cross and Ashley Cox play for 10U North Valley Rapids out of Redding and have been with the team since January. Their team took second place in the Nor Cal ASA Championships in Sunnyvale on June 20, which qualified them to compete in the ASA Nationals scheduled to be held in Chatnooga, Tennessee, and also for the ASA Western Nationals in Medford, Ore.

They will attend the ASA Western Nationals in Medford during the first week of August.

Sydney Cross is the catcher for the team and Ashley Cox is the shortstop.

Kayla Spini and Tori Weatherford, both standout players for Mount Shasta High School, play for the 18U North Valley Rapids and they too took second place in the Nor Cal ASA Championships. Their second place qualifies them for a berth in the ASA Nationals this year in Hemet, Calif. in August.

Kayla is the Rapids starting pitcher and Tori is the starting catcher for the Rapids.

Kayla was the Shasta Cascade League most valuable player the past two seasons, and Tori made all-league. They were both recently selected to the all-Northern Section team for 2010.
