She's known as Siskiyou's "First Lady Of The Fiddle." Evelyn Horner has indeed performed at the White House (for President Reagan) and at Opryland in Nashville. And she'll be performing with her 15-piece Berryvale String Band this Saturday, July 31, at the Dunsmuir Growers Market from 10 a.m. to noon.
"Evelyn was one of the highlights of last year's market, and we're looking forward to having her again this year," said market manager Sandra Hood.
Horner and her musicians will be performing a wide range of styles: Standards that include "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy," Spanish and Irish tunes ("De Colores," "Swallowtail Jig," and "Paddy's Return"), as well as plenty of old-time fiddling music. Most of Horner's band members are current or former students of hers.
And don't be surprised if Horner does a little howling, as she likes to do on Emmylou Harris's "Montana Cowboy." She'll also throw in some Western Swing that includes "Waltz Across Texas" and "San Antonio Rose."
The Dunsmuir Growers Market offers fresh-picked produce and handmade crafts every Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in front of the Children's Playground on Dunsmuir Avenue.
Upcoming performers include Dave Theno on August 7, the Mountain Gypsies August 14, Village Harpist Patty Hill August 21, and Pangia World Music August 28.
The market is sponsored by the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce. For more information call 235-4034.
