John R. Copeland passed away peacefully at his home in Grenada on July 5, 2011.

John was born on September 5, 1925 in Auburn, California to Emma (McDonald) Copeland. His birth was preceded by the death of his father John R. Copeland the day prior, due to an automobile accident.

The family moved back to Siskiyou County when John was an infant. At age five, John and his older sister Helen were raised by their aunt and uncle Sarah and Harry Cash on the Cash Ranch in Little Shasta.

He attended Little Shasta Elementary, Yreka Elementary and graduated from Yreka High School in 1944.

John married Jean Gruber of Edgewood on April 15, 1949. He worked in the lumber industry for 30 years and continued to ranch for himself on the side.

His main priority was being a loving husband, father and grandfather. He also had a love for good horses and cattle.

He was active in 4-H, State of Jefferson Quarter Horse Association, Mt. Shasta Horsemen, Back Country Horsemen, Siskiyou County Grand Jury and the Grenada Volunteer Fire Department. He and Jean were longtime members of Montague Bible Fellowship.

John’s mother preceded him in death, along with his sister Helen Pelz, and his half brother Ora Eiler.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean; three sons, Bob Copeland (Dusty) of Grenada, Bill Copeland of Grenada, and Ben Copeland (Jennifer) of Yreka; nine grandchildren, Sarah McDaniel (Brandon) of Deer Park, Washington, Crystal Leslie (Eric) of Red Bluff, John, Jesse, Suzi and Cheyenne Copeland of Grenada, Casey Copeland of Mount Shasta and Clayton and Colton Copeland of Yreka; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were held at Girdner Funeral Chapel on Saturday, July 9 at 10 a.m. with interment following in the Edgewood Cemetery.
