Siskiyou County Sheriff’s deputies investigating an abandoned vehicle near Happy Camp on Monday afternoon found the remains of two people, prompting a homicide investigation.

Sheriff Jon Lopey said  detectives have spent the last three days “analyzing and recording evidence” from the Greyback area, where one deceased individual was found inside the car, and the other about 300 yards away.

Deputies and detectives searched the area until dark on Monday, July 25 and continued an extensive investigation on Tuesday with the help of Chico State University anthropologists and Jackson County Search and Rescue.

“It’s an extensive crime scene,” Lopey said Thursday, including the two deceased parties, their personal possessions and a weapon.

Wild animals have disturbed the remains, making it difficult for investigators to identify the victims and determine how and when they died, said Sheriff’s spokesperson Allison Giannini.

The Sheriff's Department is treating the case as a homicide until they can get a better idea what happened to the victims, Giannini said.
