A Susanville man was flown to Mercy Medical Center Redding Thursday afternoon after the 2001 Chevy 2500 pickup he was driving went off Highway 89 near Bartle.

David Crockett Silkwood, 79, was driving southbound south of Harris Springs Road at the time of the accident. He suffered severe injuries when his pickup collided with several trees off the  east side of the roadway, said California Highway Patrol officer Bill Lynam.

There were no passengers in the pickup.

Silkwood was transported via ambulance to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta, then flown to Redding, Lynam said.

It is not known why Silkwood ran off the road. The pavement was dry at the time of the accident, said Lynam.

The CHP is still investigating the incident.
