The Weed High School baseball and softball teams started the regular season Tuesday with home wins against Dunsmuir.

Carlos Sanchez had an RBI single in the bottom of sixth to give the Cougars the lead in a game won by Weed, 2-1.

Jacob Turner went 1 for 3 with a run and Spencer Hall went 1 for 3 with a double for Weed. James Brunello earned the victory, and Cody Pimentel earned a save.

Weed's softball team won 14-1, as senior pitcher Jeni Cheffey allowed 3 hits in five innings while striking out 11 and walking 1. At the plate, Cheffey walked twice, was hit by a pitcher, reached on an error and scored 4 runs.

Weed senior Audali Avila went 3 for 4 and drove in 4 runs; junior Alyssa Merrill singled and doubled; and senior Courtney Fisher went 2 for 4.

Alia Ames opened the game with a single for Dunsmuir and came around to score her team's only run.
