Muriel Carol Schell passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Madrone Hospice House in Yreka, California, after living a long blessed life of 97 years.
Muriel was born March 24, 1916 in Los Gatos, California, the eldest of three children born to Louis Sr. and Anna Wurz. In 1920, Muriel’s family moved to Sunnyvale, California, purchasing 40 acres of ranching property.
In 1929, they moved to Napa, California and purchased 85 acres of prune ranches. In 1944, Muriel purchased a 25 acre prune ranch where she made her residence for many years.
On November 22, 1953, Muriel married her high school sweetheart Chester Schell; and they opened Napa Brake & Wheel Alignment. Then in 1970, they moved to Mount Shasta, California and built their dream home.
One of Muriel’s favorite things was cooking and opening her home to family and friends. She loved gardening and was an active member of Mt. Shasta Garden Club for many years.
Muriel enjoyed music and singing with Chet and was proficient in playing the piano, organ, accordion, and even the drums.
She was a painting instructor, through which her legacy will remain in many of her wonderful landscapes.
Their extreme generosity and strong sense of community led Muriel and Chet to fund the construction of the Siskiyou Masonic Temple/Mount Shasta Community Center.
Muriel was an active member in Eastern Star for decades and faithfully played piano for every event as long as she was able. Throughout the years, she held many offices including high honor of Sisson Chapter Worthy Matron in 1984.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Chester Schell; and brothers, Al and Louis Jr. Wurz.
She will be dearly missed by her only child, Nadine Tunnell of Napa; granddaughters, Kimberly Ochs (and Jeff) of Sierra Vista, Arizona and Cheryl Keiner (and Paul) of Mount Shasta; and four great-grandchildren: Jenae, Hannah, Drew and Carissa.
She was loved by all and will be missed by her family every day.
Muriel was interred at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park in a private ceremony.
A memorial will be held in August.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Madrone Hospice House, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097.
