The Bears beat Yreka for the first time in years and swept all three matches Aug. 27 in Mount Shasta
The hits keep on coming for the Mount Shasta High School volleyball program, which won three season-opening matches Tuesday night, Aug. 27, in Mount Shasta.
"Nothing like a confidence boost," said Bears head coach Greta Jones. "It was a wonderful way to start the season."
Now in her ninth year as Mount Shasta's coach, Jones said this is the first time she can remember defeating Yreka.
Her 2012 varsity team was the first in school history to win a league volleyball championship, finishing in a three-way first place tie in the SCL.
The 2013 Bears won by a 3-1 score Tuesday night, 25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15.
Jones commended her team, saying, "It takes everyone to earn a win like this."
She pointed to the strong play in the middle by returning all-leaguer Tori Hansen and 6-foot junior Kirstyn Teuscher.
Jones said Teuscher had more blocks in the match than anyone did a year ago, and the 5-foot-9 Hansen "has really picked it up in the middle."
Returning all-leaguer Sejay Sarti led the Bears' outside hitting with 8 kills, and senior Leah Maumasi had 5 kills.
Senior Alex Peruzzi and junior Ashley Cain take turns setting from their back row position in Mount Shasta's 6-2 rotation.
Junior Madeleine Moyer, who went in at the opposite side front row position for Peruzzi, had some good hits against Yreka, Jones said.
The Bears' varsity roster also features seniors Katie Reinig, Mackenzie Hunt, Miranda Gerhardt and Sydney Morris, and juniors Kelsi Pelletier and McKenlee Bryan.
Jones said the Bears were excited about the win, but "acted like it was an everyday occurrence," perhaps reflecting their coaches' modest demeanor.
It was just the first match of the season, but for the Division V Bears any win against a larger Division IV team is significant in the Northern Section playoff point system.
Yreka shared the Northern Athletic League championship in 2012 and made it to the Division IV title game for a second straight season.
Tryouts for the 2013 JV Bears team were held Monday, just one day before their first match – which ended up being two matches.
The full JV team, with sophomores and freshmen, defeated Yreka's JV team, 2-1, while an all-freshman Bears team defeated the Miners frosh squad, 2-0.
Returning from the Mount Shasta JV team that went undefeated in league last year are: setter Mary Taylor, middle hitter Kaycee Sarti, outside hitter Carlie Dunlap, and back row player Taylor Pearson.
Two sophomores, libero Teresa Moro and back row player Corina Lopez, are new to the team.
The eight freshmen on the roster are: setter Sydney Cross, outside hitters Kacey Cain and Emily Andrus, middle hitters Sam Benedict and Tyyler Enright, opposite side hitters Mikaela Cartwright and Miranda Zanni, and back row player Peyton Hough.
Mount Shasta is scheduled to return to Yreka Saturday for the annual Miner Mountain Blast Tournament, starting at 8 a.m.
Varsity games will be played at Jackson Street School; JV games at the high school.
Also scheduled to play are Weed, Etna, Trinity, Liberty Christian, Rogue River, Phoenix, Hidden Valley, and Henley.
