The lights were on until late in the night at the McCloud Fire Department station house as firefighters scurried to fill Valentine’s Day orders of chocolate covered strawberries to be delivered the next day to Siskiyou County sweethearts. Just three weeks prior, EMT firefighter Mista Johnson, along with firefighter EMS rescue captain and paramedic Brittany Fernandez came up with the idea as a fundraiser to remodel the downstairs of the fire station and build equipment lockers. Johnson, while filling out the heart shape tags for each order late Thursday night, explained, “We advertised only on Facebook and by word of mouth. We thought producing just one item would be more effective than something like a bake sale. “We could have never done this without the support of our town and surrounding communities. And we want to personally thank General Produce for their amazing product and support for our fire department.” Even Montague Fire Chief Jasen Vela came to help support the effort. Most of the 24 firefighters were delivering the delicious treats from Yreka to Dunsmuir on Valentine’s Day. Fernandez, hovering over her task of drizzling the white chocolate over the dark dipped strawberry said, “With such a short time frame and little advertising, we not only met but surpassed our goal of a hundred orders. We are already talking about doing this same thing for Mother’s Day in May.” So, plan ahead and look up McCloud Fire Department on Facebook and “like” them to be notified when they will be doing this again.
