The game was close through most of the first two quarters before Weed built a 10-point lead late in the first half.

The Cougars outscored the Tigers 12-2 in the third quarter to lengthen the lead to 20.

Cheffey and Traylor, who made 7 of his 10 field goal attempts, are two of several juniors who have moved up to varsity after playing on last year’s JV Cougar team that went undefeated in league and 22-2 overall.

Rashaan Broomfield, the most experienced of Weed’s three returning seniors, scored 7 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and had a team-high 3 steals.

Junior Truth Davis made two 3-point baskets and finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

Sophomore Thairen Sivongsa had 7 points and 3 rebounds; senior Elijah Walker had 5 points and 3 assists, and senior Zach Garland scored 5.

Juniors Blake Lane and Devin Hall scored 3 points each and Cheffey 2.

Weed Hall of Fame head coach Mike Carpine said this is the first time he can remember starting a season with no returning starters from the previous year.

Junior Kevin Washington led Dunsmuir with 8 points, senior Chase Sordahl scored 7, sophomore Kevin Puckett 5, sophomore Dylan Calzoni 5, senior Shawn Adams 4, and sophomore Trent Price 2.

The Tigers played without returning all-leaguer Tommy Stibi, who sprained his ankle after scoring a team-high 13 points in the Tigers’ 51-49 loss to Etna Monday night in Dunsmuir.

Dunsmuir’s roster also includes sophomores Bryce Padula and Treyce Ashcraft.

The Tigers, coached by Dan Ballard, are scheduled to play next at the Redding Christian Tournament Dec. 11-13.

Weed’s varsity and JV boys teams play this week at Fall River’s Block F Tournament in McArthur.

The varsity Cougars are scheduled to start the tournament Thursday at 7 p.m. against Big Valley. The JV Cougars are scheduled to play a first round game against Big Valley Friday at 11 a.m.
