J.B. Herbert (Herb) Tolbert, Jr., 63, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 6, 2014, after a long battle with a chronic pulmonary condition.

Herb was born on June 17, 1951 in Little Rock, Arkansas to J.B. and Alpha Tolbert. The family moved to California when he was a young boy, eventually settling in Mount Shasta where Herb and his three siblings spent their formative years.

After graduating from Mount Shasta High School in 1969, Herb began a lifelong commitment to learning and education.

Having earned Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Education, Herb’s passion for coaching, teaching and mentoring young people spanned a 36-year career. Prior to his retirement in early 2014, he was the Vice President of Enrollment at Simpson University in Redding, California.

An avid outdoor enthusiast, Herb went on countless hiking, backpacking and mountain climbing trips with friends and family. He also had a deep affinity for the game of basketball, which he both coached and avidly watched throughout his life.

Herb will be especially remembered for his warm smile, gentle spirit, and the lasting impact he had on others.

Herb is survived by his wife, Renae; children, Sonia and Andrew; stepson, Leon (and Crystal); grandchildren: Luella, Micah and Evan; mother, Alpha; siblings: Sonia, Joy (and George), and Marvin; nieces and nephews: Nik, Shelly, Nathan (and Serena), Deneshia, Bonnie, John, Matthew and Leslie; and an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Herb’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, at First Church of the Nazarene, 2225 North Bechelli Lane in Redding.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that gifts be made in Herb’s honor to the National Parks Foundation to preserve and protect the places he cherished so much. See: www.nationalparks.org/support-parks#memory.
