Martin “Mike” Michael Garcia, a resident of San Jose, California, passed away at his home on December 24, 2014, surrounded by his family.
His good humor, warmth, generosity and larger-than-life personality will be missed by all who knew him.
Martin was born in Weed, California to Francisco and Manuela Garcia from Spain.
Martin is survived by his loving wife, Maryann; children, Martin and Glenda; extended family, the Uribes; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor; and brother, Francisco.
Martin excelled in athletics at Weed High School and belonged to many championship teams. Upon graduation, Martin worked at a local meat processing company where he learned the basics of the meat cutting trade.
He later joined the Air Force and was stationed in Iceland, where he found he enjoyed the food service industry.
Before being discharged from the Air Force, Martin met Maryann and they were married in Connecticut. They later moved to San Jose, where Martin continued developing his culinary skills.
In 1962, these skills, coupled with his entrepreneurial spirit, led to the opening of their restaurant, Mike’s Original By-The-Bucket in Santa Clara.
Martin was a great lover of the outdoors and sports. He was recently inducted into the Weed High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
His favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing and golfing trips with friends.
His gregarious personality led him to make new friends on his travels around the world.
He was a philanthropist at heart and coordinated numerous charity events, such as the Crippled Children’s Society Wild Game Feed. He most recently donated to the rebuilding of his hometown following the Boles Fire in 2014.
A memorial service and reception was held on January 2 at 11 a.m. at Saint Martin of Tours Parish in San Jose.
