Essie Mae Etter, a resident of Weed, California, passed away on April 4, 2015 at her home. She was 96 years old.

Essie was born in Union Church, Mississippi on March 25, 1919. She moved to Siskiyou County from Union Church in 1946.

Essie worked as a cook for the Mt. Shasta Ski Bowl and for Frank Rizzo Cafe. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, and her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 61 years; Mt. Shasta Baptist Church; Poppy Chairman; and Golden Seniors of Weed.

Survivors include her son, Clevland H. Etter Jr. of Oakland; daughters: Bertha Lea (and Carl) Smith of Mount Shasta, Arma L. Knight of Oakland, Willie Mae (and Robert) Thomas of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Mary Ann Etter of Weed; sister, Willie Mae Houston of Sacramento; and 138 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great, great-grandchildren, and great, great, great-grandchildren – six generations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clevland Etter Sr.; and daughters, Josephine Hilliard and Annie L. Etter.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel with Reverend Henry Gaines officiating. Burial is at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park.
