Tigers host Fall River in Division 6 opener May 19, while Bears travel to Durham in Division 5.

The Northern Section softball playoff brackets weren’t especially kind to the Mount Shasta Bears and Dunsmuir Tigers, although the Tigers are scheduled to open with a Division 6 home game Tuesday, May 19.

Seeded No. 3, the Tigers are scheduled to host No. 6 Fall River, a team that plays mostly larger Division 5 schools in the Shasta Cascade League. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Mount Shasta was the top team on the final Division 5 playoff points list, which was released May 11. But the Bears are the No. 5 seed and are scheduled to open May 19 on the road at No. 4 Durham at 4 p.m.

Tuesday’s winners will advance to Thursday’s semifinal round at the home of the higher seed.

In other first round Division 6 games Tuesday, No. 1 Biggs is scheduled to host No. 8 Princeton, No. 7 Burney travels to No. 2 Redding Christian, and No. 4 Chester hosts No. 5 Westwood.

Dunsmuir, which won the Evergreen League with a 12-0 record, would play either Redding Christian or Burney in the semifinals.

The SCL champion Bears went 12-0 in the SCL and are 22-7 overall. Durham finished third with a 4-4 record in the Sacramento Valley North League and is 18-10 overall.

The Mount Shasta-Durham game is considered to be a second round game, with both teams getting first round byes in a 16 team Division 5 bracket that has only 11 teams.

First round elimination games are scheduled to be played at No. 1 Quincy, No. 2 East Nicholas and No. 3 Durham.

Quincy will play its second round game on Tuesday against either No. 8 Esparto or No. 9 Trinity.

East Nicholas will play either No. 7 Modoc or No. 10 Etna.

Colusa will play either No. 6 Hamilton or No. 11 CORE Butte of Chico.

With a win over Durham, chances are very good Mount Shasta would play Thursday at No. 1 Quincy.

The Bears lost to Durham, 5-3, during a tournament at Etna in March. Mount Shasta’s top pitcher, senior Ashley Cain, was out with an injury at that time.

Division 5 and 6 championship game are scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
