Cathy Holland, a 1965 graduate of Dunsmuir High School and former resident of Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta, passed away August 8, 2015.

Cathy Laraine (Girdler) Holland, 67, of Albany, Oregon, passed away on August 8, 2015. She was born on October 17, 1947 in Eureka, California, the third child of Gardner F. and Dolores Girdler.

Cathy attended schools in Sacramento and Dunsmuir, California. In 1964, she was selected as Miss Dunsmuir. Cathy graduated from Dunsmuir High School in 1965.

After learning the insurance business from her parents who owned an independent agency in Dunsmuir, Cathy worked in insurance for many years. She later worked in accounting at the Horseshoe Club in Carson City, Nevada; and held various retail positions.

Throughout her life, she lived in Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta, Rancho Cucamonga, Vallejo, and Vacaville, California; Carson City, Nevada; Chandler Arizona; Nanaimo, British Columbia; and moved to Oregon in 2014 to be near family.

Cathy and husband John Holland held various Lions Club offices including District Governor and First Lady.

Gourmet cooking and crafts were her passions. Whenever she moved, she quickly made friends by sharing cookies and baked goodies with new neighbors. She arranged silk flowers and once had a home business creating gift baskets.

Cathy enjoyed her Bunko group, playing Pogo online, and designing needlepoint coasters with sports logos.

Cathy is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Marilyn Girdler of Albany; sister, Diane (and Frank) Lazard of Carson City, Nevada; and nephew David (and Victoria) Girdler of San Diego.

A lifelong cat-lover, Cathy was nicknamed “Cat” and adopted several beloved cats as “furry children” – Callie, Slam Dunk, and Abbey.

A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
