The Mount Shasta varsity and JV volleyball teams both won tournament championships in Burney over the weekend.
The varsity Bears went 5-1 in pool play, easily defeated Big Valley in the semifinals, then defeated Burney in a best-of-three championship match after losing the first game.
The varsity and JV Bears played their championship matches at the same time, and coach Greta Jones said she was “coaching in between.”
The varsity had four players missing, but “pulled together for the win,” according to Jones.
She reported the team got “solid play from Kacey Cain, Mary Taylor, and Kaycee Sarti. Sam Benedict, Tyyler McKnight and Peyton Hough again were consistent. Miranda Zanni, Mikaela Cartwright, and Taylor Pearson all had to play a different position than usual and did a great job.”
The varsity Bears also won their first two league matches of the season last week, 3-0 over Burney Tuesday of last week in Mount Shasta and 3-1 at Etna Thursday.
They finished the week 13-7 overall.
Jones said the JV Bears played “amazing games” to win the Burney tournament.
“The rallies were long, we covered the floor and had great net play. It was a team effort from the pass, to the nice sets, and then the hit. Serves were consistent throughout the day.”
Jolene Rhoades served 11 in a row in one game, and Jones said Lily Hitchcock “had an effective serve all day. Kennedy Cross is really establishing herself as a great setter. Abby Andrus did a great job attacking.”
She thanked the parents and grandparents for their support and assistant basketball coach Paul Engstrom “for sitting on the bench in my absence.”
The JV Bears defeated Fall River in the Burney championship match, 25-15, 25-21.
