Veterans were honored and appreciated by a large gathering of community supporters during a ceremony held at the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Master of ceremonies Dean Whetstine, Cdr., US Navy, Ret., introduced keynote speaker Robert Ballesteros, a 1981 graduate of Mount Shasta High School who went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps for 15 years.

Ballesteros serves as current commandant for the Marine Corps League, Siskiyou Detachment 936, who presented/retired the colors and gave the gun salute at the ceremony.

The cheerful voices of Mount Shasta Children’s choir sang the National Anthem and other patriotic songs accompanied by their bell choir.

Nancy Wallace, Robert Menzies and Suzanne Breceda took turns reading off the names of 33 honorably discharged veterans who will be added to the granite “Hot LZ Memorial Wall” at the garden.

Following the gun salute by Marine Corps League, Siskiyou Detachment 936, Dr. Scott Durbin played “Taps,” on his horn and Rick Hood played “Amazing Grace,” on the bagpipes.

The ceremony concluded with a benediction by Pastor Nick Welch of Grace Community Church in Weed.
