On November 5, 2015 Dereck Ran Kuykendall’s six year battle with cancer ended.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Kuykendall of Mount Shasta, California; son, Dasan and daughter-in-law Jenn Kuykendall with grandchildren, Karlee and Blake of Medford, Oregon; daughter, Denessa and granddaughter, Mavis Kuykendall of Mount Shasta, California; sister, Dana Filice of Yreka, California; brother, Albert “Wade” Kuykendall of Eureka, California; mother, Connie Kuykendall of Weed, California; along with several nieces and nephews.

Dereck was born in Mount Shasta, California on December 6, 1965 to Elmer “Wayne” and Connie Kuykendall of Weed, California. Growing up, he enjoyed playing sports and working on vehicles.

In 1986, Dereck welcomed his son Dasan; and his daughter Denessa in 1993. He met his wife Ellen in 1990 and they married in 1997.

In 2006, Dereck moved to Medford, Oregon for an apprenticeship program to become an estimator for Pacific Power. He took online classes at Clackamas Community College, receiving his Associate’s degree in Industrial Technology, returning to Mount Shasta after completion.

His favorite things were taking his family and “all the kids” on adventures, such as hikes, camping trips, fishing, and visiting animal conservation areas.

He loved riding motorcycles, working on cars, playing guitar, hanging out with family and friends, beer tasting, and helping others. Although the cancer took his life, it did not take his passion for life.

A memorial service for Dereck will be held Saturday, November 21 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 812 Lassen Lane in Mount Shasta, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Mercy Hospice, 914 Pine Street, Mount Shasta, CA 96067; or Kick Cancer at kickcancermovement.com.
