Bernadene had a long career at Robert's Modern Furniture and was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Women's Society and Weed Museum Board.
Bernadene was born on August 27, 1929 in Yellville, Arkansas to John and Effie Williams. She was the youngest of five children. She died on August 26, 2016 at Lavender Hills Assisted Living in Redding CA just 40 minutes shy of her 87th birthday.
After graduating from high school at the tender age of 15, Bernadene followed her oldest sister, Cecil, out to California in 1947. Bernadene met Anthony “Tony” Vega in 1949 and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married on May 20, 1950. They lived in Redding for a short time, and then moved to Weed CA. Bernadene started her working career as a bookkeeper at Mountain Motors, but quit when they started their family. Alan was born in 1954, Marcie in 1956 and Janis completed the family in 1960.
Bernadene also worked at Weed Elementary School as an aide for several years, as a bookkeeper for JH Baxter and then started her long career at Robert’s Modern Furniture. She took a break from Robert’s for a few years and worked at Patton’s Distributing, but returned to Robert’s until her retirement in 1991. She was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Women’s Society and Weed Museum Board until 2015.
Bernadene is survived by her children and their spouses: Alan and Bernadette Vega of Oakley CA, Marcie Vega and Larry Sutton of Redding CA, Janis and Robbey Gorman of Weed CA; her grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael, Jonathan and Mary Anne, Anthony and Kaitlyn, Breanne, Austin; and her great-grandchildren Alana, Luke, Hudson, Nolan and Lincoln. She is also survived by her brother, Junior Williams of Grandview Washington, sister-in-law, Celia Suniga of Ventura and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 507 Pine St, Mt. Shasta CA at 9:30 am on Wednesday, September 7th with a reception to follow at Sons of Italy Hall, 155 Clay St, Weed. Condolences may be sent to 3618 Mt Ashland Ave, Redding CA 96001. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of your choice or Winema Cemetary , 491 College Ave Weed CA 96094.
Bernadene, Bern, Bernie, Mom, Grandma, Nona – she will be missed by many. Special thanks to the care givers and staff at Lavender Hills Assisted Living in Redding for their wonderful care and love, especially in her last days.
