The Friends of the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has scheduled its 15th annual Snow Ball for Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Mount Shasta City Park upper lodge. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The event is a community tradition and celebration of the winter backcountry recreation season. It is also one of the organization’s biggest fundraising events to support the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center.

The Shasta Ascension Backcountry Ski Race is also planned for the morning of Jan. 21 at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park, where a backcountry ski gear demo is planned throughout the day.

Snow Ball benefit

Royal Jelly Jive, a soul-jive gypsy-blues band from Arcata, is headlining the Snow Ball with an opening band from Etna.

Local beer and wine will be available, with appetizers provided by Berryvale Grocery.

As always, an extensive raffle and silent auction will be ongoing throughout the night featuring prizes from Patagonia, Outdoor Research, Voile, Backcountry Access, Delorme, local artists and businesses, and many others.

A members-only raffle will be held for an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe valued at $500. Members must be present to win.

Entrance is $25, but no charge for kids 12 and under. Tickets are available in Mount Shasta at The Fifth Season, Shasta Base Camp, and at the door. The event usually sells out.

All proceeds go towards the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center.
