The high school alpine racing season is scheduled to start on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 16, 2017, at the Mt. Shasta Ski Park.

Yvonne Malee, the head coach for both the Weed Cougars and Mount Shasta Bears, said she’s working with “fantastic” assistant coaches, including two former local prep racers.

Brian Quigley, a recent WHS graduate, is working with Weed’s eight snowboard racers.

Former Bear Jenna Kane is working with the Mount Shasta snowboard team.

The other assistant is Chris Chase, who is working with Mount Shasta’s ski racers.

As of Friday, Mount Shasta had 23 racers, 14 skiers and 9 snowboarders.

Malee said the rosters (see lists below) are subject to change.

Weed and Mount Shasta compete in the California Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation North 1 division, which has all six of its races scheduled for Mondays at the Ski Park through Feb. 20.

If a makeup date is required, it is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 24, in advance of the CNISSF State Championships, which are being held at Northstar March 6 to 9.

Malee said her goals this season include educating team members about training and cross training and backcountry awareness.

She said she partnered with the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center on the Skier’s Journey fundraiser that included a film featuring professional skier Forrest Coots, a local climbing ranger and former ski racer for MSHS.

Malee said she thinks it’s important that the students learn how to travel safely and responsibly in the backcountry. She also encouraged them to take the free clinics offered by the Avalanche Center and others in the area.

“Ideally, I would like to develop a clinic with the Ski Patrol,” she said. “Maybe next year.”
