The annual Thanksgiving Day event is a benefit for Siskiyou Food Assistance, which has been providing emergency food boxes to local low-income families since 2001.
Now in its 8th year, the annual Run for Food 5k run/walk held on Thanksgiving morning benefits Siskiyou Food Assistance. The event is designed to be fun for all ages. Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each age category from 6-8 year olds to 70-plus year youngs, and the popular stroller division.
Music, refreshments and warm bathrooms will be provided at the College of the Siskiyous Weed campus. The event begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. at the Herschel Meredith stadium (pathway behind the gym).
Everyone age 12 and up can participate in Run for Food for $15 each until Nov. 2. The fee increases to $20 after that date. Kids ages 6 to 11 are free, but are encouraged to register to qualify for awards (still free).
A registration link can be found at www.siskiyoufoodassistance.org under the Run for Food tab’s event information page.
Registration forms can also be picked up at three locations – Sportsmen’s Den, 100 Chestnut Street in Mount Shasta; Dawson Wreath Barn, 142 S. Weed Blvd. in Weed; or Buffalo Broadcasting, 316 Lawrence Lane in Yreka.
Completed forms and payment can be submitted to the same locations. Paper registrations can be mailed to SFA at PO Box 96, Weed, CA 96094.
Three participant check-in and registration events will be held the week of Thanksgiving:
• Tuesday, Nov. 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. at SFA’s pantry, 780 S. Davis Avenue in Weed.
• Wednesday, Nov. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Sportsmen’s Den, 100 Chestnut Street in Mount Shasta.
• Thanksgiving morning from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. at the COS football stadium.
This year’s logo concept was drawn by Alexis Ramirez, a junior at Mount Shasta High School. He volunteered with SFA during the summer as an Upward Bound student. “Bear Trail” was later refined into a digital image by Paul Palfini of Palfini Graphics.
T-shirts this year are black with the pink/white logo. Five shirt styles are available: adult long-sleeve 50/50 cotton blend, $15 each; men’s and women’s long-sleeve technical shirts, $20 each; and men’s and women’s short-sleeve technical shirts, $20 each.
Shirts can be pre-ordered with registration. All shirts ordered by Nov. 2 will be a guaranteed purchase. After that date, they will be available on a first come, first served basis at late registration events.
