Karen Maureen (Stevenson) Witherell, 85, passed away March 1, 2019 surrounded by family.

Born April 6, 1933 in Buffalo, New York to Robert and Catherine Stevenson, Karen remained in Buffalo and attended the University of Buffalo. In 1954, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Languages.

Following a short stint in the Marine Corps, a government agency offered Karen a position based in Germany. It was there that she met and married army serviceman, Jim Witherell in 1956.

Returning to the states, the couple lived in San Jose, California where Jim attended college and their first three children were born. Jim accepted a teaching position at College of the Siskiyous and moved the family north. Blessed with two more children, they settled in Dunsmuir, which became home for five decades.

Karen was passionately interested in Irish heritage/history, enjoyed Irish music, road adventures and church retreats. An avid reader, Karen taught her children to read before they entered school. She was an active volunteer at her children’s schools and her church.

Predeceased by husband Jim and son Shaun, Karen is survived by daughters Catherine “Kate” and Meghan; sons Dan (Nancy) and Brian (Karin); and daughter-in-law Mindy. She also leaves behind her brother Shaun; 10 grandchildren: Evan, Donald, Brandon, Justin, Daniel, Tyler, James, Cory, Riley and Brynn; great-grandson Brayden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Karen was generous, caring and warm – a natural confidant, valuing family and friends above all else. She is already greatly missed.

Services will be held March 23 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Dunsmuir. Rosary is at 10:30 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m. Following Mass, there will be a reception in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. John’s Guild 5603 Shasta Ave., Dunsmuir, CA 96025 or Friends of the Library 5714 Dunsmuir Ave., Dunsmuir, CA 96025 are appreciated.
