Next week, First 5 Siskiyou Children and Families Commission joins 57 other county commissions and First 5 California in recognition of those who have championed for young children to have a strong start in life. On Tuesday, April 16 from 4:30-7 p.m., an Open House and presentation is scheduled at the Yreka Community Resource Center, in Yreka.. RSVP is appreciated: (530) 918-7222 or allaboutthekids@first5siskiyou.org.

With an emphasis on children, prenatal through the age of 5, and their families, First 5 Siskiyou is part of a network of First 5 County Commissions working together to advocate to state and federal policy makers to optimize early childhood development and reduce childhood poverty.

Together with local, regional, and state partners, First 5 Siskiyou brings innovative programs and services to support parents, caregivers, and educators in the important role of nurturing healthy development of all children. First 5 Siskiyou Children and Family Commission partners with many organizations to provide parenting classes for families with children birth to 18, play groups, and dental, vision, hearing and developmental screenings. In addition, books are provided to children, resources and support are offered to providers at preschools and child care centers, and county-wide trainings for professionals, parents, and interested community members are provided to improve the lives of young children and their families.

According to First 5 Siskiyou Commissioner and Board of Supervisor, Michael Kobseff, “We would like to take the time to acknowledge all of our partners, past and present, who have dedicated themselves to help young children and their families. Research shows that 90 percent of the brain development occurs in the first five years of life. Children’s earliest experiences have a long-lasting effect on their potential to succeed. It is important that we continue to engage in collaborative partnerships to support families and children from day one”.

The Open House begins at 4:30 p.m., with the presentation at 5:30 pm. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be provided.

Yreka Community Resource Center, which is one of the first venues to hold a play group sponsored by First 5 Siskiyou and partners, is located at 201 S. Broadway Street in Yreka.
