I found it troubling to learn last week that the Mt. Shasta City Council had recently terminated their contract with the John Smith Family company of Dunsmuir to provide garbage collection services for Mt. Shasta.

One reason why this was so unsettling is the fact that I had known John Smith as a patient some years ago, and found him to be one of the most amazing people that I have ever known. He was a Viet Nam vet who had endured repeated episodes of tragedy with an equanimity that you rarely encounter in an entire lifetime. If you had to face adversity, he was the kind of guy you would want beside you.

I am confident that I am not alone in feeling this way. His family has been providing consistent and dedicated service to this community for decades. Hence I find the actions of the Mt. Shasta City Council inexplicable. How can one so easily ignore years of hard work with virtually no explanation? Why would you bring in a relatively unknown entity at a higher price?

I would hope that the City Council would reconsider this decision. The memory of John Smith demands that much.
