The friends and family of Leif Hansen, in collaboration with the Mount Shasta Ski Park, are planning a Celebration of Life in his honor. The event will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Shasta Ski Park.

Because Leif touched countless hearts, this is an open invitation to celebrate him.

Leif died May 9 at the age of 61 after slipping on a steep trail while carrying a kayak down to the Sacramento River at the Box Canyon Dam trailhead. He succumbed to his injuries after falling down a steep cliff despite the valiant effort of two companions who were with him at the time, according to information released by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.

“I imagine Leif had walked down that trail close to 1,000 times over the past 30 years or so,” said Jack Moore, Leif’s friend of more than 35 years, “including the early days when there wasn’t even a rope to hold onto along the trail.”

In fact, about three years ago, he and Leif worked on that same trail together, “putting in a few steps at particularly steep sections to make it a little safer for kayakers who were paddling their boats down to the river to paddle box canyon,” Moore said.

Leif will be honored with words, love, tears, intentions, music, hugs, and of course, lots of laughter, which Leif would especially appreciate. The louder and more boisterous laughter, the better.

In the spirit of sharing, this will be a potluck affair. Bring your yummiest and most heartfelt food. If possible, please bring your own plate and utensils. There will be a bar provided by Ray Merlo, Mt. Shasta Ski Park, Mark Clure, and the Mt. Shasta Avalanche Center following the ceremony. People should be responsible in their consumption. The ski park will allow you to camp in the parking lot the evening of the event.

Leif was a unique character with a classic style. To celebrate him and his style, we ask you to consider coming dressed in flip flops and a puffy or something that reminds you of him. There will be an alter that we will use to bless him and honor him. If you like, you can bring something for the altar. An example of this might be: a stone, a feather, a poem, or something that represents Leif to you. Before the ceremony, there will be tables with handmade prayer flags for people to write messages for Leif. We will also have a place to write stories to be added to a Memory Book for Leif’s son Zach. You can also email your favorite story of Leif to Jack Moore at jackaway@hotmail.com.
