Mount Shasta Fourth of July festivities brought a new and progressive change to its 2019 run walk event. Meeting the needs for thousands of participants, this year Castle Rock Water Company donated water for the hydration stations located through out the route and downtown locations.

This local water company is located in the nearby town of Dunsmuir. Castle Rock Water Company uses five-gallon reusable containers and provided dispensers to ensure hydration to this year’s event. Volunteers filled up paper compostable cups and people were able to refill reusable water bottles. The Dunsmuir Rotary Club was also selling reusable metal canteens as a fundraiser.

This simple change saves thousands of single use plastic water bottles from the landfill. California cities such as San Francisco have banned the use of single use plastic water bottles at events and have opted instead for ecofriendly hydration filling stations. Mount Shasta and surrounding townships should be a beacon for responsibly meeting the hydration needs at all future events by utilizing the concept of hydration filling stations.

Together we are making a difference to protect our natural resources and health of our ecosystems.
