Winner Terry Brown from Red Bluff was the over 50 high money winner and took home the 2019 saddle.

The Squaw Valley Riding Club, also known as “The Horsemen’s,” hosted the sixth Annual Whitey Jespersen Memorial Team Roping over the weekend.

“It is a good turnout, good weather and everyone is having a good time,” said Horsemen’s president Peter Tolosano. It is a lot of work to put this on but it is a lot of fun for the ropers and the spectators. The SVRC is an excellent facility for this type of activity. There are lots of other competitions going on in the north state but these ropers choose to come and rope here.”

To put this event on, it takes weeks of arena preparation, installing a sound system among other things, but club members all say it was well worth it.

“This is a lot of hard work but it’s fun. I am sore and it is only the first day,” said Ashland Wall, a volunteer who worked the cattle shoot.

Spectator Rick Hall says, “After talking to a few of the cowboys, they confirmed that we have the best arena. It is so nice to see this facility being used as it is supposed to. This has been a fun day.”

Hamburgers and hot dogs were sold during the day and after the competition on Saturday, the Horseman’s put on a chicken and tri tip barbecue by Raymond Zanni’s catering service. They were prepared to feed over 100 people but served only 76 so on Sunday they also sold tri tip sandwiches.

Both the Jespersen family and the Horsemen’s uses the proceeds to fund scholarships. The Jespersen’s scholarships are for District 1 High School Rodeo Association and the Horsemen’s funds scholarships for local students.

Whitey Jespersen’s son, Billy, has been hosting this event for many years but moved it to the Horsemen’s six years ago. His says, “It is always good to come here and catch up with friends from around Shasta and Tehama Counties. We want to thank our generous sponsors: Dustin Brown Landscaping, Gold Rush Burgers, Ag Insurance, Sutton Creek Cattle Company, North State Garage Doors, Bonnie’s Bookkeeping, Jespersen Guide Service, Outlaw Saddles, Frank and Cindy Johnson and Joe and Sally Briggs. We couldn’t do all this without these sponsors.”
