Loretta Jefferies Buffington of Mount Shasta passed away peacefully on July 9, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Chelsea, Oklahoma on April 16, 1932 to parents Lyle and Zella Jefferies. She married Howard Eugene Buffington also of Chelsea on August 24, 1950.
Their early marriage was spent in Chicago where Howard attended college and they later moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where Howard was employed at Los Alamos Labs. In 1960, they relocated to Saratoga, California. In 1972, the family moved to Mount Shasta where Howard and his business partners built the cable company known as Shasta Cable TV. Loretta assisted in the office for many years.
Loretta was a talented seamstress and crafter and crocheted beautiful afghans for her family. She also enjoyed gardening. While her daughters were young, she was an active Girl Scout leader. She was an animal lover and enjoyed her menagerie of cats and dogs throughout her lifetime. She was an avid reader and followed current events and politics and had deeply formed opinions – her knowledge of history and politics was vast. During retirement, they enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Europe, visiting their children and road trips in their motorhome to the Midwest. Loretta was generous, creative and a person of integrity. One of the highlights of her life was her six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years. Her life will be cherished and remembered by her children, Teresa (Dave) Burroughs of Shasta Lake City; Jeff (Suzanne) Buffington of Yreka; Susan (Bruce) Stiny of Sacramento and Lesley (Paul) Buffington of Roseville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. During her illness her faith in the Lord was strengthened, and she found solace in prayer. Private services and internment at Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel and Park will be held in September. Memorials may be sent to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Mount Shasta Hospice.
