Children as young as 3 were present (with the proper noise reducing headphones), as well as families, dogs and thrashers, who just wanted to celebrate with their local favorites.
The canyon was reverberating the sweet sounds of heavy metal during the 6 th annual Metal in the Mountains Festival, held in the serene and picturesque Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens. Bands from Yreka, Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta, and surrounding Oregon and Nevada areas were present, despite some road delays, and were all ready to rock.
As northern California’s largest underground metal/rock festival, there was something for every metal fan, including thrash and speed metal, industrial, grindcore, and mosh pits galore. “This festival is going to kill,” said the sound crew as they set up for the first performers. Children as young as 3 were present (with the proper noise reducing headphones), as well as families, dogs and thrashers, who just wanted to celebrate with their local favorites.
Hellametal, a local thrash death group from Dunsmuir, had a large crowd of supporters moshing and thrashing along with their speedy and aggressive sound. “We started this festival 6 years ago so my band could have a place to play since the bars around here didn’t allow metal ... so we’re going to bring some Hellametal to your face,” said the lead of Hellametal as they began their set.
There were many vendors present, including a Metal in the Mountains tent, where one could get a t-shirt, sticker, or shot glass to memorialize the event. A majority of the vendors were the bands themselves, selling merchandise and cds, and talking with fans. “Grab some merch for gas money,” said the vocalist from Yreka’s Thy Farewell, “It’s a free show and we do it all for you.” All participating bands performed for free, as a thank you to all of the fans who had shown up that day and over the years, and helped them become who they now are.
