Russel Arlo Calkins was born on December 15, 1937 in Weed, California to Stuart and Cornelia Calkins. Russel was a fourth generation Siskiyou County native. Russel graduated from Weed High School on June 6, 1956.
Russel enlisted in the United States Air Force and started his service to our country on June 8, 1956. Russel served our country for four years in which he spent three of those years in France.
The years upon Russel’s return to Weed he worked at the lumber mill. The year of 1964 brought a big change when Russel started working for the California Department of Fish and Game, which had always been his dream.
In the winter of 1964 he was married to Loretta Jones, also of Weed, California. Russel and Loretta had two children: Donna Hamilton (John) and Eric Calkins. Russel and Loretta divorced later in life.
Russel worked for the Fish and Game for almost 35 years and traveled all over the state of California before finally retiring as the manager from Crystal Lake Fish Hatchery in Cassel, California. In the years following his retirement he resided in Mount Shasta, and eventually lived out his remaining years in Redding, California with long time life partner Anita Nevison.
Russel is survived by his brother Ronald Calkins (Heidi) of Beaverton, Oregon; daughter Donna Hamilton (John); and son Eric Calkins. He also left behind grandchildren John Hamilton (Whitney), Kurt Schneider, Eric Calkins, and Madison Hamilton, as well as great grandson Jake Hamilton. Russel also leaves behind Anita and her children and grandchildren.
Services for Russel will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Redding, California on September 27, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. There will be a reception immediately following the services.
