After authorities found the body of a 70 year old Carrick man in the backyard of his residence last week, a 37 year old Weed man was arrested for his murder.

Robert Henry Tessmer Jr. was booked into Siskiyou County Jail Thursday morning, Oct. 10, after the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit served a search warrant at a home in the Carrick Addition, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary investigation and evidence at the home suggests that the victim had been murdered and disposed of on the property, said Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey, while the suspect and “a companion” were occupying the man’s house and driving his vehicle.

Although there is no evidence that the companion, who has not been identified, took part in the murder, there is a possibility that she may be charged as an accessory after the fact, Lopey added.

The homeowner had been the subject of a missing person investigation, which led to the service of the search warrant, Lopey said.

The body was recovered on the property in “some state of decomposition. The victim’s name is being withheld until the coroner can make a positive identification.

“We are looking into using mitochondrial DNA or dental records to make a positive identification,” said Lopey.

Because the victim was an elder and the suspect is “a young, fit adult,” Lopey said the case is “all the more tragic.”

Tessmer remains in Siskiyou County Jail in Yreka as of Tuesday afternoon and is being held on a single murder charge. Bail was set at $1 million when he faced the judge Tuesday afternoon.

The case is still under investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the Sheriff’s 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.
