John Vincent Lamanna was born on Mother’s Day, May 13, 1934 to Vincent (Jim) and Mary Lamanna; he passed away at his home surrounded by his wife, son and brother on December 26, 2019. He was 85 years old.
John was very proud of his Italian ancestry as well as being a native of Mt. Shasta. He spent two years in the U.S. Army in Hanau Germany working with atomic weapons. He loved to tell the story of how and where he met Elvis Presley over there.
On June 18, 1961, he married Linda Coppi and proudly raised two sons Todd and Eric.
John spent 34 years in the lumber industry, starting out at Cooper’s Mill in Mt. Shasta cleaning the sawdust around the tippy burner. He then advanced to operating the chipper, next came driving the log handler. After the sale of Cooper’s to P&M Cedar Products, he became yard deck foreman before advancing to yard superintendent. When the company moved to McCloud, John went with them, retiring in 1999 as their Trucking Coordinator.
The Mt. Shasta Fire Department was a big part of his life. He spent 31 years as a volunteer firefighter, serving as president of the association for a time. He loved the times he spent working with the guys getting ready for Santa’s sleigh and being Santa Claus. He also loved his ice cream cones after the Wednesday night meetings.
John was preceded in death by his son Eric Lamanna and his parents. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years Linda, his son Todd (Michelle) of Mt. Shasta, Daughter-in-law Tricia Lamanna of Lake Shastina, Grandchildren Jason (Kayla) Scott of Fairfield, CA, Giovanni Lamanna of Mt. Shasta, Miranda (Garrett) Richardson of Lake Shastina, and Delanie Lamanna of Lake Shastina, his twin brother Joseph A. (Peggy Lou) Lamanna of Concord CA, his nephew Joseph Powell Lamanna of Obion TN, and two Great-grandsons Liam & Kade Richardson.
A celebration of life is being planned for this summer.
