Norma Lea "Cherokee" Culbertson (born Wrinkle) passed peacefully on March 10, 2020 in Redding, CA at the age of 78.
Norma was born on August 20, 1941 in Bolivar, Missouri to Willard & Augusta (Ammerman) Wrinkle. She graduated Bryman Dental School where she became a Dental Assistant. In 1975 she moved to Weed, California. She worked at the Y Café where she started her bartending career. On Feb. 14th, 1980 she married the love of her life, David Culbertson. Blending their love and families together as one. Always encouraging her children to be the best that they can be and follow their dreams. For years she worked at Layton’s Liquors, where she formed many lasting relationships within the community. After raising their family, they restored the burned-out bar now known as Papa’s Place.
Cherokee loved country music, reading and watching Bible stories on TV. She attended the Church of Christ for the last 6 years until she was unable to attend over this past year due to unforeseen issues causing too much physical pain to leave home. She had the gift to crochet and made blankets for her family to wrap them in her love. One joy of Cherokee’s life was when she and Dave would hit the open road on their Harley. For years they went to Nevada to attend Camel and Ostrich Races, traveled to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the South Dakota. She was a “spit fire”, as some would say, and we loved her that way.
Norma is survived by her beloved husband, David Culbertson Sr; children, Marvin Piva, Christy & Bob Forry, Rick & Pam Robertson, Lori & Mike Woods, David & Lee Ann Culbertson, Billy Culbertson, Danyel Piva, Pam Rondeau and Karyn Feinstein; siblings, Dixie Payne of Missouri, Shirley Church of Reno, NV, Kay Bradley of Shasta Lake City and Willard (Jeff) Wrinkle of Happy Valley, CA. Lifelong friend, sisters at heart Mary John Wrinkle, Laura Ackerman and Kitty Lou Clotfelter. She also leaves many, many Grandkids, Great Grandkids and has a GG Grandbaby due in September. Many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her daughter Jackie Piva, her Parents and brothers Beryl Wrinkle and Jackie Wrinkle.
A funeral is scheduled for April 24rd at 11am at Mt. Shasta Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Weed Community Center in Weed. Aaron Redelsperger will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Norma's life. Interment to follow at a later date at the Northern California Veteran’s Cemetery in Igo, CA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. In Memory of Norma “Cherokee” Culbertson.
