An extraordinary woman, Leila Talliofero Owens was born May 25, 1926 in Washington DC. She spent her formative years in New England before attending Southern Seminary and Wheaton College. She was swept off her feet by Herb W Whitcombe, and with their young family they traversed the country from Boston, MA through the Midwest, eventually settling in Northern California. As her children grew, so did Leila, obtaining a Masters in Family Therapy and Counseling from San Jose State. She enjoyed the constant growth she experienced through her work and took great pride and joy in it.

Leila’s life long connection with the Episcopal church youth groups was formative to her counseling group work and the establishment of a private practice here in Siskiyou County, after her daughter and her spirituality led her to Mount Shasta in the early 80s. She was well respected and admired for her depth of wisdom and playful approach to counseling and to life. She was an avid gardener her entire life and reveled in watching birds from the dinning room table while enjoying a cup of tea and a game of solitaire. Her cozy home provided a warm haven for deep conversation, laughter, and a tasty treat to satisfy the sweet tooth.

Leila transitioned peacefully from this earth early in the morning on March 23, 2020 surrounded by family. She is survived by her daughter Zena Whitcombe-Kosel, her son Reese Whitcombe and his wife Sandy, and her granddaughters Melea and Arianna Kosel and Amanda Whitcombe. Her presence and wisdom lives on through her family, friends and all those who had the pleasure of knowing her joyful and insightful spirit. Her family would like to voice their appreciation to friends and family for their love and support and especially the fantastic hospice team.
