Denny's opened its dining room for the first time in two months Friday morning. The state approved Kern County's variance to move more quickly into Governor Gavin Newsom's Stage 3 late Wednesday, allowing restaurants to open their dining rooms. The decision was effective immediately, but Denny's and several other restaurants in town took a day to prepare and reopened on Friday.

A few booths were occupied at Denny's Friday morning, with appropriate social distancing. Servers wore masks, but diners -- obviously -- did not wear masks while eating.

Joanie and Gary Nordvall are a long-time married couple who still sit on the same side of the booth together. They were finishing up their first breakfast out in two months as they graciously shared their thoughts on the reopening with the DI.

The Nordvalls said they headed to Denny's because it is one of their favorite restaurants. Gary said he had bacon and eggs and Joanie jokingly noted she went against the grain and ordered macaroni and cheese. Both appeared to have enjoyed their first meal out.

The Nordvalls they are glad to be able to dine out again and hope to see more people now that Newsom's shutdown restrictions are beginning to loosen up.

"We missed everybody like crazy," Joanie said.
