Siskiyou County is lagging far below the national and state response rate in completing and returning the census forms. On Friday May 22, the national return rate was 59.9%, California as a whole is 61%, while Siskiyou County stood at 46.6%.
Reduced counting of the actual number of people in our rural county can have serious negative consequences on our local economy and our general overall well being by reducing our share of state and federal dollars flowing in. For each person not counted our state loses $1,000 in federal funding for essential services such as school lunches and road repairs, along with a myriad other services we take for granted. Based on census numbers reported the state then allocates funding to counties.
If you did not receive a printed form in the mail, you can go on line to www.my2020census.gov to complete the information or you can call 844-330-2020 to complete the form over the phone in English or Spanish.
An accurate census count means more local jobs, services and representation in the Congress to serve our whole county.
