This August, Social Security turns 85 years old and is the nation’s most successful government program that best protects workers earned retirement benefits.
For about 50% of our seniors, Social Security provides 50 percent of their income, and for about 25% it provides 90 percent of their income (cbpp.org). Last year, 20% of Social Security beneficiaries were receiving SSDI or were young children of deceased workers.
The biggest risk facing Social Security is the Republican party. Doug LaMalfa’s campaign website says this: “Congress should work to preserve the benefits that those at or near retirement have anticipated, while also guaranteeing that future generations have the ability to control and plan for their eventual retirements.”
Having “the ability to control and plan their eventual retirements” is Republican double-speak for privatizing Social Security. Privatizing Social Security is nothing more than giving Wall Street financiers our retirement money to play with. The 2008 recession and the recent coronavirus stock market crisis are reminders of how insecure privatized retirement benefits would be.
You must vote this November but not for Republicans. If they gain more power, Social Security is gone. They will destroy it and your retirement benefits.
Please vote for Audrey Denney and Joe Biden this November if you want to keep and protect Social Security as your earned retirement benefit.
