“We are opening completely, but under strict guidelines from the CDC and the Boys and Girls Club of America,” Zimin said. “We’re in close contact with the school district, too.”

The staff at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Shasta have a challenge on their hands, but they’re meeting it with masks on and safety precautions in place.

“We had to remove all the toys, all the crayons – all the sports equipment, all the games (from the facility),” said executive director Noam Zimin in advance of Monday’s first day open since the COVID-19 closed the organization’s doors in March.

“We are opening completely, but under strict guidelines from the CDC and the Boys and Girls Club of America,” Zimin said. “We’re in close contact with the school district, too.”

The club’s number of registered kids are a little lower than usual, Zimin said. “All the numbers are pretty low at clubs in California. We have about 40 kids registered for summer camps. We anticipate those numbers will grow as people see how everything goes over the next couple of weeks.”

Parents will drop off kids outside in front of the school and they’re not permitted to enter the club.

“We have staff ready to greet them (kids) with thermometers to check their temperatures. If they have a temperature, they can’t come to the club,” Zimin said.

In addition, everybody is required to wear a mask. They’ll be provided for registered kids.

“They’ll be fun masks; cloth with – a smiley animal or other cool design. They choose what they want,” said Zimin.

Much of their time will be spent outside, and when kids show up for the camp, they will get a toy beach bucket of art supplies for their summer projects.

Staff will help the kids sanitize it every day, said Zimin.

B&GCGS plans to host arts and crafts camps, mountain bike camp, basketball and soccer and other sports camps this summer.

Summer camps are open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting Monday at Sisson. Registration is always open and can be completed online at bgcgreatershasta.org. Call (530) 220-7623 or go to https://www.bgcgreatershasta.org/with questions.
