Phyllis (“Pee Wee”) Bender Hubbard was born October 16, 1933 in McCloud, California to Harry and Thelma Bender. Her parents were caretakers at the Hearst Ranch while she was a child. From McCloud, the family moved to Dunsmuir, California where Phyllis graduated from Dunsmuir High School. She attended Chico State College. She married Jack Kleaver and had three children: Karen Sturm (Chico), Jon Kleaver (Chico) and Kristi Kleaver (Alaska). Her grandchildren include Ryan, Matthew and Kiah Kleaver (Kristi’s children), Kyle Kleaver and Garrett Kleaver (Jon’s children), and one great granddaughter, Edith. Phyllis was divorced from Jack Kleaver, and married the love of her life, Richard (“Dick”) Hubbard in 1973. She added three more children: Robert, Scott and Susie Hubbard to her family. Phyllis and Richard spent many wonderful years in their home in Castella that Richard had built. Together, they gardened, baked, hosted wonderful meals, and welcomed family year-round. Richard preceded her in death. Phyllis was adored by her children and the rest of her family, including many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Phyllis worked as a transcriptionist and receptionist for several doctors in Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta. She was known for her intelligence, wit and common sense. And, if she had grown up in today’s world, she most likely would have been a doctor. She was an avid sports fan and watched as many San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers and Oregon Ducks games as she could. She also followed tennis. She would say that she had two favorite baseball teams: the San Francisco Giants and whatever team was playing against the Dodgers! She was an excellent cook, loved hard crossword puzzles and read vociferously.
She is and will continue to be greatly missed. The family is thankful for her peaceful passing and that she is now reunited with all her loved ones who have gone before. We love you Mom and PeeWee!
