Sandy MacLeod Mitchell passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday, July 30, 2017, after a 22 year battle with cancer.

Sandy was born in Detroit on March 30, 1946, the third of five children. He grew up in Detroit and trained and worked as a respiratory therapist during his twenties.

Sandy also worked with children in daycare, and as a chemical dependency counselor and domestic violence therapist. He lived in New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles before moving to Seattle in 1988. Sandy moved to Mount Shasta in 2005.

While in Mount Shasta, Sandy worked one-on-one with at-risk children through Remi Vista. He later went back to college to train in Early Childhood Education and volunteered at the Discovery Head Start in Weed.

Sandy loved volunteering at the pre-school and the children adored him. Whenever he showed up, the children’s faces lit up and they would shout ‘Sandy’s here!’ and run over to greet him.

Sandy also had a passion for being outdoors on Mt. Shasta, and walked into Sand Flat everyday. In the wintertime, Sandy snow-shoed in to Sand Flat daily, and spent hours there enjoying the outdoors, and the peace and quiet that came with it.

Sandy is survived by his brother, Bruce Mitchell; sister, Catherine Gobel of California; sister Jenny Cline of Dallas; several nieces and nephews; and many friends from all over the country.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Discovery Head Start in Weed, California.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Sandy Saturday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Shasta City Park by the picnic tables south of the Headwaters. We are having a small potluck (finger food only), so you are welcome to bring a treat to share along with your memories. In case of rain, please call Carol at 530-925-9036 for directions to alternate venue.
