Norbert Nickolas Posl of Mt. Shasta, CA, passed away on May 21, 2018 at home surrounded by family. He was 95 years old and a 17 year resident of Siskiyou County. Norbert was born in 1923 on the family farm in Bird Island, Minnesota, to Michael and Celestine Posl, the 10th of 12 siblings.

Norbert left the family farm in 1945 and sailed as an engineer for the US Merchant Marine. He was drafted into the US Army in 1948 but returned to the sea in 1950 and sailed for various steamship lines out of San Francisco, where he met his wife Julie, also from Minnesota. In 1954 he began his 30 year career with PG&E and moved to Eureka where he eventually settled to raise his family.

Norbert was salt-of-the-earth. He loved fishing in the ocean and in the lakes and rivers of northern California and Oregon. On his 95th birthday he was able to go out on Lake Siskiyou one last time. He was an excellent card player, and especially tough to beat at cribbage. He was a tender of the land since boyhood, wherever he lived he always had a bountiful vegetable garden and fruit trees, and he loved sharing his harvest with family and friends. He was competent and practical, handy with tools and constantly busy. Like many of his generation, he never threw anything away but always found a re-use for things.

Norbert is survived by his wife of 67 years Julie, son Wayne (Marni) of Mt. Shasta, daughter Cheryl (Robert) of San Rafael, and grandchildren Danielle, Spencer, Annika, Nicholas, and Grace. He was preceded in death by 11 siblings, son Bradley Posl, and grandson Cameron Posl.

Gifts in memory of Norbert can be made to California Trout online at or by mailing a check to California Trout, 360 Pine Str. 4th Fl, San Francisco, CA 94104. Norbert’s passion was fishing, and this gift would support the protection and restoration of wild trout fisheries in the Shasta region.

There will be a private celebration of Norbert’s life among family and friends at a future date.
