Joseph P. Lobis passed away at his home in Wasilla, Alaska on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. A mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wasilla on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11:00 am and a Celebration of Life service will be held in his hometown of Weed, CA on August 17, 2018 at 4 pm.
Joe, known dearly to his family as Grandpa Joe, Baby Joe, and Babe, was born in Weed, CA on October 15, 1936. He joined the Air Force on November 16, 1956 where he met his wife, Jean. They were married on May 26, 1958. He was stationed at Johnson’s AFB in Japan, at Charleston Naval Base in South Carolina, and finally at Eglin AFB, Florida where he was Honorably Discharged on July 30, 1965.
His work as an engineer brought him to the Philco-Ford company and then to Lockheed Aerospace working with the Space Shuttle programs in Sunnyvale, CA where he retired in 2005. After retirement, Joe and Jean moved to Wasilla. He still loved electronics and working on his computer and keeping in touch through Facebook with his copious family, friends, and former co-workers around the world. He loved going to Starbucks every day to get his Frappuccino. He really loved that the baristas knew his name and how he liked his drink. Joe was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
Joe is survived by his wife Jean, his daughters Laura Decker and Linda Kilbourne, his sons Larry Lobis and Louis Lobis and their respective spouses, his sister and brother-in-law Mary and Ron Kirby, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Louise Lobis, and his brother Patrick (Pappy) Lobis.
